Albay town empowers LGBTQ sector via ‘equality’ seminar

LEGAZPI CITY – Members of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer (LGBTQ) community in Camalig town, Albay province have learned the importance of the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity or Expression (SOGIE) Equality Bill through a seminar facilitated by the local government unit (LGU).

Tim Florece, Camalig information officer, in an interview on Friday said the meeting held on Nov. 5 focused on the provisions of the bill that mandates giving equal rights to all the members of the LGBTQ community and aims to protect them from discrimination.

“The meeting was facilitated and funded through the Gender and Development (GAD) fund of local government unit-Camalig. It was attended by more than 60 members of the CamaliGayños Inc., Gayon Cares. The activity wants to further promote the rights of the LGBTQ community with the end goal of protecting them from societal harm and discrimination,” Florece said.

He said the town mayor fully supports all endeavors of the group, particularly the activities that enhance the capabilities and talents of the members.

“We are on strengthening the relationship and involvement of this group, the public services which are inclusive to all and no one are left behind, this is the kind of public service that Mayor Carlos Irwin Baldo Jr., want to the people of Camalig,” Florece said.

Baldo, in a statement, said the activity is part of the LGU’s advocacy in providing safe spaces for LGBTQ members and highlighting the local government’s full support in mainstreaming LGBTQ rights as equal citizens and viable partners in local development. (PNA)
