DOLE program to benefit 491 senior citizens in Albay

LEGAZPI CITY – Close to 500 senior citizens in Libon, Albay province who are still fit to work are expected to benefit from the Department of Labor and Employment’s (DOLE) community-based package of assistance that provides emergency employment.

In a message to local media on Wednesday, DOLE-Bicol spokesperson Johana Vi Gasga said DOLE awarded on Tuesday a check to Libon municipality a total of PHP1.8 million for the wages of workers who were tapped for the cash-for-work services under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program.

“TUPAD beneficiaries will render work activities and at the end of their 10-day work period, they will receive their salary based on the prevailing highest minimum wage in the region for the private sector,” Gasga said.

She said the municipality of Libon will decide when it would implement the program, adding that it would be not later than September.

“Dahil mahalaga ang bawat miyembro ng mamamayan, binibigyan din natin ng oportunidad sa hanapbuhay ang ating mga elderly citizens na kaya pang makapag trabaho sa kani-kanilang komunidad sa pamamagitan ng programang TUPAD (Since every member of a community is important, we give opporttunity to everyone who can work thru the TUPAD program),” Ma. Zenaida Angara-Campita, DOLE regional head, said in a statement.

TUPAD is one of the flagship programs of the DOLE that provides temporary wage employment to informal sector workers affected by natural or man-made calamities. (PNA)
