DOST sparks hope for 26 children in conflict with law thru candle-making

Twenty-six children in Conflict with the Law (CICL) at the Camiguin Youth Welfare Home in Mambajao received a candle-making skills training program from the Department of Science and Technology – X (DOST – X) and CAMI Candle PH.

The program initiated on January 10, 2025, is essential in fostering their rehabilitation, supporting their reintegration into society, and offering opportunities for personal development and livelihood growth.

Ms. Catherine Fabello of CAMI Candle PH led the session, which taught the children how to craft aromatherapy candles using the basic candle-making technology of the DOST Industrial Technology Development Institute (DOST-ITDI).

“Dako akong pasalamat sa DOST kay nakabalo nako ug buhat sa mapatsada na kandila na lahi ra sa ginabaligya sa uban. (I am deeply grateful to DOST for teaching me how to make unique candles that are different from what others sell).” said one of the CICL participants.

The program seeks to equip the CICLs with practical livelihood skills and instill a sense of purpose and hope for a brighter future.

The children practiced melting, pouring, and curing the wax for optimal scent throw and effective marketing strategies. To further enhance their growth, the participants received essential candle-making supplies.

On behalf of the Provincial Governor Xavier Jesus D. Romualdo, Provincial Social Welfare and Development Officer Ms. Maida G. Baclayo, RSW, extended heartfelt gratitude to DOST-Camiguin, led by Ms. Joanne Katherine R. Banaag, for their steadfast support in equipping the children with valuable practical skills.

Aromatherapy candles, which the children produce at the end of the program, are in growing demand due to their therapeutic and calming benefits. They can also serve as elegant home décor and thoughtful gifts.

This candle-making initiative underscores DOST’s commitment to fostering inclusive opportunities and building resilient communities through innovation and empowerment. By addressing community challenges with sustainable solutions, DOST showcases the power of skill-building programs to drive positive change and uplift lives. (NNCD,JKRB/DOST Camiguin)
